FAQ’s

DO we have to Travel/Compete or can we opt out?

Junior Theatre Company: Does not travel/compete

Junior Comp Team: Competition is a huge part, yes it is required for this team

Teen Comp Team: Competition is a huge part, yes it is required for this team

Teen Theatre Company: Competition is encouraged but optional, we always have a few that choose to opt out of travel/comp

How do auditions work?

Step 1) In the summer/fall students audition for acceptance into a company/team, once accepted they register

Step 2) After rehearsals start all team members will be given a script and a breakdown of what to do for auditions, a few rehearsals in, we will have auditions in class for roles. All company/team members are guaranteed to get a role but that role may be ensemble member.

Can we watch rehearsal first and decide if we want to join?

No sorry, rehearsals are closed to company members only. Also, by the time rehearsals start jackets and scripts have been ordered and company lists are set. But you are welcome to watch our shows this season and then try out next year.

is the jacket required?

Yes but it is the same jacket Dance Team uses so if you already have one you don’t need to repurchase

What should I wear/bring to rehearsal?

Wear clothes you are comfortable dancing in. Leggings, tank tops, shorts, tee shirts, sweatpants are all great choices. Most shows require black jazz shoes but we may change that up from time to time depending on the show. Please do not wear clothing that depicts violence, weapons, illicit substances or messages of cruelty or intolerance. Jeans, crocs and flip flops are not allowed.

Please bring a water bottle filled with water only.

how do costumes work?

All shoes, tights, undergarments, hair/makeup and basics such as plain black leggings/pants or a plain tee shirt or button up is supplied by the student. Everything else, essentially all the costume pieces, are supplied by us. That being said, if you have an amazing costume at hone that you think is just perfect and you want to wear it, or a parent that loves sewing and making things or its a modern show and you have the perfect regular school day outfit already, we love to see what you can bring in but we will not ask you to go out and buy any costumes.

how do chaperones work?

Teen: We do not take chaperones for teens, they get to feel grown up and the staff is in charge of them at comps

Jr Comp: We send out links to apply to be chaperones then we choose a handful of parents who are eager for the challenge. Chaperones cover their own costs for the trip.

if I’m not a chaperone can I still come watch competitions?

For the two local competitions? Yes absolutely! Please do! And come cheer us on!! For MTCA in Southern California, no I’m sorry. The wristbands to get in are sold to the studios and limited to the number of chaperones. You really wouldn’t be able to enter. It’s not our rules.

how does competition work?

Our two comp teams ( Teen Comp Team and Junior Comp Team) are going to three competitions this year! Two are local comps, less than two hour drives with most likely only a one day commitment over the weekend and those will be two of the same competitions that our dance teams will already be attending so we can all cheer each other on. We will be competing with shortened versions of our bigger productions. Students may also have the option to bring some of their other solo work to these, see below. These are simple events, you drive to the competition for that day, check in before your scheduled time, perform your piece, watch some other pieces and then go to the award ceremony and head home. Note if you choose to do a solo it may or may not be on the same day and may involve you coming up a second day that weekend.

Teen Theatre, Teen Comp Team and Junior Comp Team all go to MTCA. Our BIG competition is the Musical Theatre Competitions of America (MTCA) in Orange County. This is our big travel event. We fly down Thursday night, check into our hotel, spend Friday and Saturday at the competition/festival where students can compete in their group pieces and their solo/duets etc plus take workshops and do talkbacks with broadway stars, a cattle call audition (teens only) and huge performances. Sunday morning we go to Knotts Berry farm for an award ceremony then Jr Comp students spend the rest of Sunday at Knotts Berry Farm and then fly home. Teens head to Disneyland for Sunday and Monday then fly home Monday night.

how do solos/duets/monologues etc work?

All Teens and Junior Comp students are required to develop one piece (see choices below). These will involve a lot of work on your own and some guidance in class. It is what you make of it, you will have many opportunities to perform for feedback from your peers and staff. You are also welcome and encouraged to work with private coaches or take private lessons with our staff to develop your pieces. All students will compete with these pieces at MTCA. There may be other performance opportunities provided as well. Additionally, depending on the rules each local competition provides, you may be able to compete your solos etc at the local competitions as well. Jr Comp students enter 1 category (unless on dance team and working a dance solo then you may also add a dance solo). Teens may enter as many categories as they like.

  • MTCA (everyone gets 1 already built into the cost of the trip!)

    • 5th graders PICK ONE: Vocal Solo or Monologue

    • 6th/7th/8th graders PICK ONE: Vocal Solo, Monologue, Dance Solo, Duet, Costume Design, Set Design, Makeup Design

      * Dance Team performers may do one PLUS their dance team solo if they have one to a musical theatre song

    • High School PICK AS MANY AS YOU LIKE but anything over 1 is an additional cost: Vocal Solo, Monologue, Dance Solo, Duet, Costume Design, Set Design, Makeup Design

  • 2 LOCAL COMPETITIONS (these are an additional cost)

    • This is based on what those competitions offer for individual categories, we will let you know as soon as we do. Dance solos are a definite yes for ALL ages including 4th/5th grade. Vocal solos are likely a yes. Monologues/duets/design are less likely to be offered here.

what is a team PARENT and is that different from a chaperone?

TEAM PARENT: We seek out 2 team parents for JT and 2 for Junior Comp to volunteer to help backstage at all our big events (Showcase, competitions etc). These are super chaperones who spend a bit more time getting to know the kids, want to be super plugged in and involved and are willing to learn everyone’s names. Their goal is to be a parent with the eyes and ears of a parent at all times during an event, doling out band aids, monitoring behavior, giving hugs and looking out for kids’ needs. Team parents do not have to complete volunteer jobs in addition to being a team parent.

CHAPERONE: Chaperones are specific to MTCA. This is a huge commitment and chaperones do pay their own way on the trip.

How does hotel/rooming work on the MTCA Trip

HIGH SCHOOL: 4-5 students to a room. All students are asked to change clothing in the bathroom only so there are no minors undressed in front of others.

JUNIORS (older) : For our older kids, adults stay in adult only rooms and the kids stay in kid only rooms 4-5 kids to a room as appropriately divided by age and gender. Each room occupied by kids in JR Comp will have its own designated chaperone helicoptering in and out to help kids with hair and makeup and getting ready and making sure lights out happens at designated times. That chaperone (as well as all staff members) will always be available to their group of kids at all hours if needed. All students are asked to change clothing in the bathroom only so there are no minors undressed in front of others.

JUNIORS (younger) : For our younger kids, one parent chaperone will stay in the room with each group of 2 kids. That chaperone (as well as all staff members) will always be available to their group of kids at all hours if needed. All students are asked to change clothing in the bathroom only so there are no minors undressed in front of others.
